After a bond is posted, some states require a continuation certificate to be submitted at license renewal since the bond is not continuous. States that require a continuation certificate are:

  • Delaware
  • Illinois
  • Mississippi
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • South Carolina
  • South Dakota
  • Utah
  • Virginia
  • Washington
  • West Virginia
  • New Jersey

Some states are continuous bonds but may require a verification certificate showing that the bond is active and in effect, to be submitted. States that typically require verification certificates include:

  • Arizona
  • Louisiana
  • Massachusetts
  • Missouri
  • Nebraska
  • New Mexico
  • Oregon 
  • Pennsylvania
  • Tennessee
  • Wyoming

Some states must have a specific renewal date. Illinois and South Dakota require their bond to expire on December 31st of even-numbered years. North Carolina, South Carolina, and West Virginia must expire on June 30th. Some states, like Virginia and Utah, require the bond to coincide with the two-year license term.
